Luther A. Franklin, 84, Topeka, died Saturday, Feb.6, 1999, at home. He was born Sept. 12, 1914 in Mt. Grove, Mo., to Thomas Marion and Katherine Eldora McCarthy Franklin. He lived in Havensville before he returned to Mt. Grove. He lived in Topeka more than 50 years. He owned and operated a tire shop until 1951 and later worked for Mencer's Tire Shop. He also was a taxicab driver and worked for the Topeka Transit system and then for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 18 years. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War ll and was stationed in Australia. He was a member of Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was married to Helen "Margaret" Brown on Sept. 6, 1951 in Topeka. She died July 4, 1997. Survivors include a son, Melvin White, Topeka, and a brother Harley Franklin, Topeka. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home. Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct graveside services at Rochester Cemetery. Mr. Franklin will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
