Gottfried (Fred) Mund was born Oct. 18, 1873 in Tomaszów, Poland to Andreas and Julianna Mundt née Freier. Fred was the fourth child in a family of seven – Martin (b 1867), Mathilde (b 1869), August (b 1871), Gottfried, William (b Aug 16, 1876), Wilhelmina Amelia (b Oct 28, 1879) and Karolina (b Aug 30, 1888). In Poland, Frederick was a laborer. The towns of Rawa, Wlocklawek, and Łódź, Poland were important towns from his youth. At age 28, he sailed on the SS Williehad, departing Bremen, Germany and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in March 1902. He first went to his Cousin Gottlieb Freier home, in Benton Harbour, Michigan. After that, he stayed in Chicago, Illinois for a short time.
In 1906 Fred Mund moved to Walsh, Alberta, where he was the proprietor of the Grand Hotel. In 1911, Andrew, and Fred’s sister, Karolina Teutsch née Mundt, were working for him as bartender and cook respectively. In 1910, Fred met Katherine Windecker, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada, where she worked as a cook in the Maple Creek Hospital and as a housekeeper for the RCMP commandant. On Sept. 16, 1911 Fred married Katherine, age 20, in Maple Creek, Sk. When they were first married she helped run the hotel. In 1913, Fred homesteaded part SW3-23-27-W3M, directly adjacent to the Canadian National Railway town of Westerham, SK. He apparently did not meet the requirements of the Canada Homestead Act (1872), and did not receive title to the homestead.
In 1921, Fred (age 46) and Katherine (age 30) Mund nee Windecker, Victor (age 7), Hector (age 6), Walter (age 5) and Clara (age 2) were living in the Village of Walsh, AB on Lot 7 8B 4. Fred was listed as a laborer. In about 1924, Fred and Katherine purchased the Leestmayer farm on McKay Creek, south of Walsh, AB in the Graburn District. They raised sheep. Fred also worked as a bricklayer and plasterer. The Munds had six children - Victor Frederick (born July 7, 1912), Hector Felix (born June 12, 1914), Walter Konrad (born Mar. 19, 1916), Clara Freida Theodora (born Aug. 30, 1919), Ralph Theodor (born Mar. 29, 1923) and Ronald Frank (born Apr. 8, 1928). All the Mund children received their education at Walsh and McKay Creek schools. Fred and Katherina Mund and their sons farmed at McKay Creek until 1942, when it was sold to Jacob Heller. They moved to Medicine Hat and Fred built two houses on the Flats. They lived in one home and rented the other to boarders. Katherine died Dec 24, 1960 at age 68. Fred Mund died October 29, 1968 at age 95. Both are interred in Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, AB. According to a newspaper article, Fred’s clothes caught on fire while he was warming himself at a gas stove and he was severely burned. He died from the injuries.
