Milla Bayuk of Pensacola Beach and Boca-Raton, Florida passed away Monday,June 18,2001.
Milla was born in Leningrad. Her father, a prominent Journalist and her Mother, a leading physician. Her youth was interrupted by the cataclysm of World War II.,in which her entire family perished. She alone, survived, captured by the Nazis. Milla was deported to Germany, where for four years she was interned in a German forced labor camp. Following the war,Milla emigrated to France, married and became the leader of an international dance troupe which performed in many world capitals.
After a failed first marriage, Milla remarried and emigrated to the United States.She began teaching Russian and French part-time and gained entrance to Georgetown University. A supurb student, Milla was conferred three degrees.A BS,MS,and PhD., all with high honors. Her PhD
thesis was written in Spanish.
In 1967 Milla was one of but four women hired by the University of West Florida during its inagural year.For the next thirty years, Milla taught language and linguistic courses at UWF and was engaged as well in preparation of foreigh language teachers. She retired from UWF in 1997. Milla was a woman of both imense talent and achievement. She spoke fluent English,Spanish,French, German,Russian and Bulgarian. She could also speak, in varying degrees, Ukrainian, Portugese,Italian, and serbo-Croation. Trained in ballet, she was a professional dancer and performed in some reknowned locations, including the the Theatre Odeon in Paris and the Theatre of Monte Carlo.She earned three college degrees while working and raising a son at the same time. She wrote Russian poetry that was highly acclaimed by her peers.On one occasion, she read her work on the same program as Russian emigre poet and Nobel Laureate, Joseph Brodsky. Milla's star also shined brightly as a business woman,where together with her husband, she acquired and managed a considerable portfolio of rental real estate.
Dr. Milla Bayuk is survived only by her loving husband, Barry Samuel Bayuk, a loving son, LT. Colonel Guy Durand, and one grandson, Scott Barry Durand.
