Joan Sullivan Burnett passed away on Sunday, January 9th in San Antonio, Texas, where she resided for the past decade. She was 86 years old. Born in the Canal Zone of Panama, Joan was primarily raised in Coronado, California and spent her early years in Southern California, where she married to Frank Welch, a naval aviator who was killed while on duty in an aviation accident in 1951. She moved briefly in New York to pursue a promising modeling career, but left it to return to California to better raise her son, Michael. She married Edward Wood Burnett in 1954 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Mr. Burnett was in the Naval Reserves, later becoming a senior partner in an investment banking firm. There a second son, Robert was born within the year. Devoted to one another, Edward and Joan enjoyed a full and rich life together and were inseparable. After Mr. Burnett's retirement in 1978, the couple moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and then to Coronado, where they had first met. They lived there until 2000, when they moved to San Antonio, where Edward had been born and raised. Approximately three years later he passed away. Joan Burnett is survived by her two sons, Michael of Pasadena, California and Robert of Charleston, South Carolina; and five grandchildren: Mark, Veronica, Victor, Emily and Elizabeth. A loving wife and mother, she will be missed and remembered for her great beauty, graciousness, and humility.
