Vergie Mary Frances Ward, 79, died May 7, 2004 at Lawton. She was born November
24, 1924 to Emma VAUGHN and James Montiville Martin in Oakley, Tennessee. The
family moved to Oklahoma in October of 1925 and settled in the Liberty Community
southeast of Granite. She finished High School in Ozark.
She married Carl Cecil Ward May 3, 1942 at Mangum.
The couple owned and operated Con-8 grocery store east of Blair from 1945 to
1948 then moved to Alamagardo, New Mexico and worked at Holloman AFB. In 1971
they moved to Mangum.
She was a member of Mangum First Baptist Church and was Sunday school teacher
for 30 years and a leader for the Girls In-Action, formerly [unreadable] for 33
years. She also worked in the pre-school department for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband Carl or the home, two daughters Carol Gilbaugh,
Mangum; Judy Green, Hobart; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; one
brother and sister-in-law Luther P. "Rex" and Rita Martin, Altus; two sisters,
Eloise Price and husband Wes, Altus; and Murthie Holdaway, Amarillo, Texas; and
a sister-in-law Lucy Ward, Altus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Lucille Gambill and Inez
Lehrmann, one brother Joe Bob Martin and one great-granddaughter.
Services were May 11, 2004 at Mangum First Baptist Church with Don Ross
officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of People's
Cooperative Funeral home, Lone Wolf.
