Luther P. "Rex" Martin, 77, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.

Rex was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Granite to James M. and Emma M. (Vaughn) Martin. He graduated from Liberty School in Granite and later met the love of his life, Voretta "Rita" Wertman. They were married July 25, 1955, in Clovis, N.M.

Rex spent 21 years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. During his tours of duty, he traveled many places, including Thailand, German and Ethiopia. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Tacoma, Wash., and Ft. Carson, Colo. After retiring from the Army, Rex worked at Mates TV Repair Shop in Colorado Springs, Colo. He later moved his family to Altus where he worked as a TV repairman at F & M T.V. After retiring from electronics, Rex began working at Wal-Mart in sporting goods, where he was well known.

He was a member of the American Legion in Altus and was saved and baptized in the Olustee Church of Christ.

He is survived by his loving wife Rita Martin of the home in Altus; one son, Terry Ray Martin and wife Donna of Cave Creek, Ariz.; two daughters, LaDonna Robertson and husband Troy of Altus, and Shirley Hudson of Cottonwood, Ariz.; one sister, Murriel Holdaway of Amarillo, Texas; seven grandchildren, T.J. Martin and wife Amanda of Washington, D.C., Christina Tunstall and husband Zac of Mesa, Ariz., Kelly Martin of Cave Creek, Ariz., Crystal Card, Jason Card, Ra'Chael Kelley and husband Nathan, and Chadd Card, all of Altus; four great-grandchildren, Jason Wayne Card Jr., Lillian Card, Dakota Wayne Card, and Brooklynn Rayce Kelley; many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends across the country.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe Bob Martin; and four sisters, Inez Lehrmann, Lucille Gamble, Vergie Ward and Eloise Price.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Lowell-Tims Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Bill Osborne officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
