Captain John Capillo was born February 17, 1886, in the historic town of Magna Grecia, in modern day Scilla, Italy; a town since ancient times was synonymous with the Greek Poet Homer. Most notably for John Capillo's own life and legacy, he was the founder of the NYFD's Columbia Association after being promoted to Captain in June 1922~November 1934 of Engine Co. No. 28 Ladder 11, New York City.
John's parents were: Bruno Capillo and Maria A. Fedele who married on March 22, 1885. John and his siblings were born on Santo Spirito #22 Scilla, Italy, in a house that was located on the lower tier of the town, within 30 feet from the church by the same name, and was washed away in 1908 from the Tsunami, a pivotal factor for the remaining family in America, according to Maria Angela Fedele's concern that frightened her knowing her numerous relatives, friends an neighbors had perished and the shoreline was rendered unrecognizable. It was the worst earthquake in European history. In 1895 Bruno and Marie immigrated to New York after having three sons: John, Pasquale (Pat), & Tony. They emigrated to America, arriving at Ellis Island on 1 Jun 1895, sailing aboard the S.S. Kaiser Willhem II from Genoa, Italy.
They moved to 148 Mulberry Street with his Brother, Pasquale at the age of 9.
On December 16, 1906, Giovanni Married Rose Romanò. Pasquale Capillo and Antoinette Magre were the Best Man and Brides Maid/witnesses who signed the wedding license. They married at the now razed St. Boniface church in Manhattan in 1906, then located at 304 East 47th Street NYC. John and Rose had Seven Children: Angela on Dec. 7, 1907-D.1978); Joseph April 24, 1908-D.1977, Domenick Oct 14, 1911-D.1980, John March 8, 1912-D.1963), Mary July 23, 1915-D. 1964, Edward July 2 1917-D. 2002) & Rosemary June 8, 1924-D.1980). All 7 children born and raised as the first owners in Woodhaven, Queens when it was the first house on the block.
John Capillo was a Fire Chief, and founded the very first Italian-American Fire Fighters guild in New York City.
On November 21, 1934, John Capillo died during a false alarm, one day after fighting an intense fire, and suffering from smoke inhalation a day before. He died at 3:20PM on Nov 19, 1934 at the Fire House located at 604 East 11 Street Manhattan. The remarkable 1934 transcript was diligently documented and is viewable in its entirety in PDF form by the court stenographer in late 1934 & 1935 respectively.
He left behind his wife, Rose and (7) Children. A trailblazer in his own right, On March 23, 1934, just months before his tragic demise, he founded the first one of its kind in the US: "The Columbia Association", insuring support to families left behind in the event of tragedy of any worker of the FDNY. His funeral was a procession that led his family, friends and colleagues down 5th Avenue terminating at his Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. He was buried in the crypt of mother Maria Fedele, and headstone purchased by son Domenick at St. John's Middle Village Cemetery. About 100 feet away from the crypt is the fictional 704 Houser street (The Archie Bunker residence from "All in the Family", which is in real life the house on Cooper Avenue. It is just behind the old cemetery gate and visible when looking SE towards Cooper.
