The records of this office show that one Jacob Lowdermilch served in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign, (unable to write his own name) and in Capt. John David Woelpper's Company of the German Battalion of Continental Troops, commanded successfully by Col. Baron Arendt, Lt. Col. George Stricker, Col. N. Houssegger. Jacob was the old gentleman of 59 years. He was appointed Sergeant, 24 July 1776, commissioned Ensign on 19 Nov 1776 (same as Lt.). File N ORD-fjm. Appointed 2nd Lt., 15 May 1777. He resigned 8 April 1778.

"Congress being informed, there are two ensigncies vacant in the German battalion, proceeded to elect persons to fill up the same; and the ballots being taken, George HOWARD and Jacob LAUDERMILK were elected."

The battalion or regiment was organized under the Resolve of Congress of 24 May 1776. It was raised in Pennsylvania amd Maryland, but not belonging to any state, It was regarded in 1777 as one of the 16 additional regiments.
