Leander Faires Whitten was born in 1848 in Lauderdale County, Alabama to David Clay Whitten, Sr. and Malinda Ann Faires. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Wayne County, Tennessee. There in 1865 Leander felt led by God to enter the ministry and was ordained a Methodist minister.

Leander married Mary Elizabeth Carter in January 1878 in Carroll County, Tennessee. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Alabama where he served churches in Talladega and Tuscaloosa counties before moving to Birmingham, Alabama about 1910. Leander and Mary reared their family and spent the rest of their lives in Birmingham.

Leander died in 1918 and Mary in 1935. They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.
