In 1878 a young Methodist minister named Leander Faires Whitten was in Carroll, Tennessee and married Mary Carter on January 15. Shortly after their marriage the Methodist church sent him to serve in Chinabee, Talladega, Alabama, where they had their first child, Annie, in 1881. Lena was born in 1885 in Jackson County, Alabama, and Ida in 1889.
By 1910 Mary and her spouse were living in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama. Apparently there was an adequate number of Methodist church assignments there to keep them busy for the rest of their lives without relocating, and they were able to stay there to finish rearing their children.
Rev. Leander Whitten died in 1918, leaving Mary a widow. She died seventeen years later in 1935 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
