My handsome dad, who signed and sent this to his sister Ethel in 1948. He had the bluest eyes I've ever seen. He was so proud of his time in the Air Force, serving the country his parents had adopted as their own. He survived a plane crash and sustained injuries that would haunt him the rest of his life, but he always made jokes about them. When I was a little girl, I asked him what happened to his hair. He told me about the plane crash and how he'd survived by skidding down the runway on the top of his head. The next day, I boasted about my war hero dad to all my friends, how he lost his hair because of a plane crash. My equally bald school principal took me aside. "Tell your father I think I must have been in the same plane crash." I did. My dad laughed so hard, I fell off his lap.

Being a family of florists, my mother creates each decoration for my dad's grave herself. I tried to get her Christmas tree for him (which was done in holly and red velvet bows and was very beautiful) into the picture, but I couldn't unless I stood too far back for the camera to record the inscription.

When we went there on Christmas Day, someone had torn my mother's holly tree to bits. We managed to put it back together, while she cried. I told her it looked more like an animal was responsible. I hope she believed me.

While it was "just a decoration", it took my mom almost two weeks to complete. Her hands are very arthritic. And wearing protective gloves made things worse, so she did it with bare hands, meaning she was covered in scratches and cuts from the prickly holly leaves.

I don't know why, nor do I wish to understand why, anyone would desecrate a memorial left on a loved one's grave. But I do know that we won't stop honoring my dad, and I also know my mother will never stop making things for him, no matter how long it takes her, no matter the chances it'll be destroyed again. What can't be destroyed is our love for him, especially my mom's love for him. Nor can his love of his country and service to it be destroyed no matter how many times flags left on his grave are stolen. The essence of my dad as beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and veteran is always there. The only things stolen, in reality, are bits and pieces of the person's soul, the person doing the stealing.

Rest in peace, Dad, and keep looking out for all of us. We'll see you again. (Just please tell me that Heaven has pastitsio and spanakopita.) Opa! :)

My dad as a baby. Since photographs were very expensive, and his parents were very poor, AND he was the only child who had a baby picture taken, I'm fairly sure this shows the importance of a male child in a Greek family of that time. This is an original photo, hence the folds and rips. And I'd love to know why the background is a marble staircase. My dad would look at this picture and sigh. "I still wish I had that head of hair." :)

My dad and my daughter, his first grandchild. He was always a very dapper dresser until she came along. She'd always order him to put his pajamas on, no matter what time it was, and when we asked why, she'd answer, "I want him to be comfatill." Naturally, because she loved being in HER pajamas and assumed her favorite person in the world deserved the same. Of course, he'd do it.

I never saw my father in his pajamas EVER, especially over his clothes. Grandparents are wonderful people. He was definitely one of the best.

That stuffed animal on her wrist was actually a watch. He'd ask her what time it was, and she'd wriggle and scream, "IT'S TIME FOR A KISS!"

She'd also demand he paint her fingernails. He'd look at me with a grimace, look back at her with a smile, softly croon a song in Greek that included a lot of cursing, and do it. She'd have fingernail polish right up to every knuckle, but she'd look at them and say, "Nice job, Papa. Now do my toes." The softly-sung Greek song that included a lot of cursing would begin again.

He's missed so much.
