Rev George Solomon Walker OSA

George was born in Fly Summit NY, in 1882, to Solomon and Mary Ann (Buckley) Walker. A convert to Catholicism, he entered the Augustinian Novitiate in 1906 and professed his first vows the following year. He was assigned to St Monica's College, Rome, for theological studies and was ordained there in 1913.

After his return from Rome as World War I was about to break out, he was named Rector of Postulants at Villanova. He was then named Master of Professed and Novices until 1918 when he became Rector of the Mission Band, a post he held until 1934. In his day he held a nation-wide reputation as preacher.

In 1934, Fr Walker was named prior and pastor of St Augustine's in Troy NY, and it was here that his heart remained. He was also pastor and prior in several other parishes, including St Laurence, Lawrence MA; Immaculate Conception, Hoosick Falls NY; and St Joseph, Greenwich NY.

From 1956 to 1962, he served as Prior at Good Counsel Novitiate, New Hamburg. In 1962, he was transferred to St Nicholas, in the Bronx, where he was assistant pastor until his retirement due to failing health and blindness.

The week before his death he was transferred to Rosemont Manor in Montgomery County PA and here he ended his labors, at the age of 92, September 14, 1974. Originally buried at St Mary's Hall Community Cemetery, Villanova, when that Cemetery was relocated, Fr Walker was reintered to the Augustinian Plot at St Johns Cemetery, Lansingburgh NY.
