Enlisted in the Texas Cavalry May 23, 1861. Assigned to Capt/ Charles L. Pyron's Company (B), 2nd Regiment, Texas Mounted Riflemen. He was 20 years old at the time. He mustered in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX.

His pay records indicate that he was paid the sum of $50.00 for his horse and $15.00 for other belongings.

Initially, he was mustered for a period of 12 months, but later muster documents show that he may have re-enlisted for another 2 years' service or for the duration of the war.

The Company he was assigned to was successively designated as Captain Pyron's Company, 2d Regiment, Texas Mounted Riflemen: Captin Poor's Company, 2d Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers and Company B, 2d Regiment, Texas Cavalry.

The 2d Regiment, Texas Cavalry (also known as the 2d Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles) was organized May 23, 1861, of companies which had previously been in the State service. (1st) Company F re-enlisted in April, 1862; was furloughed to May 31, 1862, and subsequently became Company I, Morgan's Regiment, Texas Cavalry. The remainder of the regiment was re-organized in July, 1862 and (2d) Company F was organized September 27, 1863.
