James Allen's parents were William & Ann(a)Jane (Clark) Allen. He came to the U.S. with his parents & several brothers & sisters sometime between 1840 & 1850; they stayed in Brooklyn, NY for a time & then moved to Darke County, Ohio near Versailles. His parents, William & Ann Allen are buried in English Cemetery, Wayne Township, Darke County, Ohio (outside Versailles). His wife (married in 1866 in OH), Arrilla Pitsenbarger Allen Bosworth is buried in King City Cemetery, King City, MO as is one of his son's, Henry Peter Allen. They had 2 other children: John W. (1867 - 1952; buried Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Dodge, Dodge City, KS) & Bervina "Anna" Allen Bryan (1869-1955 buried Graceland Cemetery, Sidney, Ohio). As noted on his grave stone, he served in the Union army during the Civil War. The Pittsenbarger genealogy book states: "He served in the Civil War, Co. E, 40th Regiment Infantry. He was enrolled Sept. 18, 1861 as 1st Sergeant, promoted to 1st Lieutenant 6/20/1863, transfered to Co. E, 51st O.V.I 12/10/1864. While in the line of duty at Chickamauga, GA on 9/20/1863, he was wounded by a musket ball from the enemy, in the right arm, ball entering the elbow & lodging in the wrist, where the ball remained, and since his arm was weak, he could not use it. He was honorable discharged at Columbus, OH 10/3/1865." Additional Note: His future father-in-law, Peter Pitsenbarger (Arrilla's father) who enlisted at age 48 as a private in Co. E, 51st O.V.I in 2/1865, was commanded by James.
There are several sources that confirm his Civil War services. His DOD comes from the source of "Headstones...provided for Civil War Vets".
