Leola Milholland Barber Wheatley

Leola May Wheatley, age 92 of Roswell, New Mexico, formerly of Holyoke, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002 in Roswell. She was born on March 14, 1910 in Martinsville, Missouri. She was baptized at the Christian Church in Martinsville at the age of 15.

Leola was married on March 14, 1928 to Leland Barber in Grand City, Missouri. Following her marriage, she walked up the aisle with her husband to join the Nazarene Church in Denver, Missouri.

Five children were born to Leola and Leland; Phyllis Mae, Annetta Margie, Leland Marvel, Odetta Faye and Albert Henry. Leola and her husband lived near Denver, Missouri for 13 years. During this time, Annetta died due to a heart condition, Odetta died with whooping cough and Leola's husband died with enlargement of the right side of his heart.

Leola moved to Holyoke, with her three little ones in January of 1942. While in Holyoke she worked for Dr. Hill at the hospital and later worked at Safeway.

She was united in marriage to Walter Wheatley on September 6, 1945. To this union one son was born, Walter Eugene. Following their marriage, Leola's oldest son Leland died in an accident at the age of 31.

Leola worked in the lunch room at school during the winters and at the hospital during the summers for 20 years. She then worked as rural route postal carrier for seven years and retired in 1980.

Walter Wheatley passed away on June 29, 1981 and a grandson, Kerry Dean Barber, died in November 1995.

Leola is survived by three children; Phyllis Glick and husband Chuck of Roswell, New Mexico; Albert Barber and wife Donna of Bennett; Eugene Wheatley and wife Jane of Castle Rock; daughter-in-law Eva Merrill of Sterling; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; four half-sisters, Stella Smith of Missouri, Mary Allen of Holyoke, Wanola Meyers of Nebraska, and Margaret Baack of Denver; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Leola Mae Wheatley were conducted Monday, July 29, 2002 at First Christian Church in Holyoke with Reverend Jim Blake officiating. Interment was made in Holyoke Memorial Park.
