Mary E. Kane, age 97 of Carmel and formerly of Elwood, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Kindred Bridgewater Care Center in Carmel following an extended illness. Born April 1, 1915 to Edward and Laura (Tyree) Blubaugh in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Mary Ellen moved with her family to her father's hometown of Elwood in the financially challenging months preceding the Great Depression. Twelve years old at the time and the oldest of five siblings she would spend the majority of her adult life in Elwood.

Mary attended the St. Joseph Catholic School in Elwood as a young child. After graduating Elwood High School she married Herschel Kenneth "Kenny" Huffman at a young age. They would have four children, Kenneth "Sonny", Linda, Robert and Ronald.

Having grown up around her family's plant nursery she always had a fondness for growing flowers and vegetables. No stranger to the kitchen, her cooking always brought much anticipation and a contented stomach. Always providing for her family, Mary held many jobs during her lifetime including those at the Vogue and Elwood movie theatres, Hinshaw's drugstore, Vest cleaners, Steel Slitting, and Wicke's lumber company in Elwood, as well as, ten years at Delco-Remy in Kokomo. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She provided a warm and loving home to all of her family and was always there to help in times of need. She showered us all in her heartfelt wishes for our good and never-ending prayers for our safety. Many of her fondest memories centered around family gatherings at her and Mick's home on Country Club Road. No matter where we were, we knew we could find a warm meal, a comfortable seat and a compassionate ear at her home.

Mary was a lifelong, dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood. Her faith carried her through innumerable challenges and her ultimate trust was in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mary's family includes three children, Linda (husband Lowell) Bain of Carmel, Robert Huffman of Taylor, MI, and Ronald (wife Judy) Huffman of Elwood; fifteen grandchildren: Nina, Kenny, Kent, Kevin, Cindy, Matthew, Robert "Chip", Jeff, Lisa, Ellie, Jeremy, Jason, Rhonda, Lynn, and Rae Ann; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 26 years whom she married May 13, 1961 and who died October 8, 1987, Max W. Kane; son, Kenneth "Sonny" Huffman (wife Rose) of Daly City, CA; former husbands, Kenny Huffman and Fred Willhoite; two sisters, Doris Yates and Margaret Stiner; two brothers, "Junior" Blubaugh and Gene Blubaugh; and a grandson, Kenny Huffman.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 28, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood with Father Dan Duff officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 2 to 5 PM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood, and will include a 4:00 PM Rosary service
