Dr. Scott, a native of Pope County, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.
He was a dentist.
Dr. Scott was a teacher and basketball coach in Golconda before receiving his doctor of dentistry degree from St. Louis University in 1938. He operated his practice in Rosiclare until 1959 when he opened an office in Metropolis. He also served as a teacher at Edwardsville Dental School.
Dr. Scott was active in the Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club and Elks Club. He was also instrumental in efforts that led to the four-laning of U.S. 45 into Metropolis.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Gertrude Eichorn Scott; one son, Joseph Scott Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; his daughter, Sally Scott Hard of Sarasota; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson. His parents were Sir Walter Scott and Birdie Bird Scott.
Prayers will be said at 6 this evening at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home, followed by visitation until 8.
