George was educated at William & Mary. During the Revolution he joined Col. Henry Lee's Legion of Continental soldiers & served in Armstrong's Cav. Troup. He was captured by British cavalry near Dorchester, S.C. and was held until the end of 1782. After being exchanged, he was discharged as Lt. in 1783. However, he continued to serve in the VA militia and rose to the rank of Brig. Gen. As a result of the election of 1788 he and his wife's uncle, Isaac Coles, were sent by Halifax County to ratify or not the Constitution of the U.S. He was an antifederalist and voted no. Later in life George served from 1776-1797 as Clerk for Halifax County, was a vestryman for Antrim Parish, member of the House of Delegates, 1802-03, and a State Senator for one term. The original town of South Boston, VA was incorporated in 1796 on land which he owned.

In April 1784 George married Sarah Coles Tucker. They resided at "Oak Hill" Plantation across the river from South Boston, VA. Their children not linked below were: George Jr, Clement, Henry, Mrs. Jos. Hyatt (Mary Coles Carrington) Scott, & Mrs. Paul Carrington (Emily Eaton Carrington) Venable. Sarah Tucker Carrington died in 1821 in Halifax County.
