A native of San Giovanni Rotondo, Pietro Covino was born to Michele Covino and his wife Maria Assunta Magno. A month later, the latter took him to the Capuchin Friary in order to have him blessed by Padre Pio. "Auguri…auguri…auguri!", told her Padre Pio as soon as he saw the child. "Why so many auguri?", asked Assunta. "This son will become a priest", was the Saint's reply. And so he did, for by the time when he was still seven years of age, not knowing of this prophecy, he began frequenting the same convent of the Capuchin Fathers, whom he eventually joined on September 17, 1935, at Morcone.

Ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Secondo Bologna on March 21, 1942, it was only following this occasion that his mother confided to him Padre Pio's propechy. After forming part of several fraternities, including 17 years in Foggia, he was sent to the convent of his native San Giovanni Rotondo in 1968 as a sexton. It was he that on September 21 of that same year, administered the last rites to Padre Pio.

Chaplain of the Larino Hospital between 1969 and 1973, after rendering services at San Severo, he was assigned back to San Giovanni Rotondo as chaplain of the infirmary in 1985. He remained there until his death a few days short of his 94th birthday.
