U.S. Navy Apprentice Seaman Frank Edward Burgess died in the Mare Island Naval Hospital in Vallejo, California on February 15, 1921

Francis E. Burgess, aged 16 years, 11 months, died on Feb. 16, 1921, at the Mare Island Hospital, off the coast of California, of pneumonia. Mr. Burgess joined the U.S. Nvay on Nov. 21, 1920, and was stationed on Goat Island, where he remained until his death. The deceased was born in Darlington, March 15, 1904, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Burgess. He leaves to mourn his death his parents, two brothers, Bernard and Kenneth, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wedge.
The remains arrived in Darlington on Monday and were taken to the home of his mother and grandparents. The funeral was held on Wednesday from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The interment was in the Union Grove Cemetery. The Harold Bates Post of American Legion attended in a body and performed the ceremony at the grave.
For the last six years he has made his home with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Thos Leahy, near Gratiot.
