Esther Adams, 90, of Eleva died Monday, February 4, 2013, from complications of a stroke.
She was born February 27, 1922, on the family farm by Eleva; daughter of John and Amanda (Berg) Nelson. She walked to Big Creek School, a modern one room, eight grade school with Delco Electricity, running water and a telephone. She attended Eleva High School where all four grades were in one room. Esther learned to do hair at an eight month beauty school course in 1939. She worked at the Presto Defense Plant after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Esther married Wilfred Adams, the farmer from the next valley, on December 29, 1943, in Eleva. She spent her life as a homemaker and mother.
Esther was a member of the Eleva Lutheran Church where she served as the Sunday School Superintendant for 10 years and played in the Bell Choir for about 40 years. She also wrote the church Thanksgiving program for several years. She completed the Bethel Bible Series then spent many years being a Bible Study leader. Esther enjoyed the Big Creek Homemakers from the 1960's until just recently. Esther wrote the history of the Big Creek School and organized the first Eleva High School Reunion.
Wilfred and Esther loved to travel, taking trips throughout the United States as well as to Central America, Norway and Germany. Esther enjoyed reading, jigsaw and crossword puzzles as well as writing and various crafts.
She is survived by four children, Mary Adams of Marathon City, WI, David Adams of Ft. Worth TX, Paul (JoAnn) Adams of Eleva, Judy (Larry) Gifford of Madison, WI; daughter-in-law, Val Preslar of Midvale UT; brother, Norris Nelson of Eau Claire; sisters, Alice Thomte of Whitehall, Elaine Welge of Eau Claire; two grandchildren, Tim (Kris) Adams, Becky Adams; four step-grandchildren, Justin, Bob, Mat, and Josh Searle.
She is preceded in death by husband, Wilfred; son, Bill; brothers, Richard and Jim Nelson; sister, Florence Anderson; her parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday February 7, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Eleva Lutheran Church in Eleva with the Rev. Kermit Solem officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Park Cemetery in Mondovi.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 8: 00 p.m. on Wednesday February 6, 2013, at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Eleva and one hour prior to service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be given to the Eleva Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
