Five employees testified that after the baby had been born, Showery first tried to smother her with the placenta, then dropped her into a bucket of liquid, then finally placed her in a plastic bag and tied it shut. He set the bag aside, and the employees noted that it moved for a while with the baby's breathing. They did not know what became of the baby's body after the abortion was complete.
Even though the body was never recovered and there were no records of the abortion at Showery's practice, a jury of seven men and five women, one of whom was pregnant, deliberated only 1 1/2 hours before finding him guilty. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
