Rueben or "Ruby" was born in Ukraine, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a young boy (around age 7). He descended from a family of Kosher butchers, and worked at his family butcher shop in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to California with his wife and two children in the late 1930's or early 1940's, and continued in the butcher profession. Later, he would venture into owning a poultry farm with his son and son-in-law, called S&K Ranch, where they raised egg laying hens and sold eggs throughout Ventura County. An avid smoker, Ruby came down with lung cancer, which ultimately took his life late in 1962. Both his son and daughter would succumb to the same fate.
