Obituary - Jonas Newton, of Stony Brook, passed away on Sunday, February 15, after a few weeks' illness. Mr. Newton had been suffering with a severe cold, but was confined to his bed only two days.
Funeral services were held at his late home Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. T.J. Elms officiating. Burial was in the family plot in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Newton celebrated the 60th anniversary of their marriage on January 1st. It was also Mr. Newton's 80th birthday.
Deceased is survived by his wife, Helen Taylor Newton; two sons, five grandchildren, two brothers, Elvin, of Stony Brook, and Horace, of Islip, and one sister, Mrs. Joanna Platt, of Port Jefferson Station.
Mr. Newton had been a life long resident of Stony Brook and had in his possession many interesting old photographs taken over 65 years ago. He was a son of the late Horace Newton and Elizabeth Smith. One son, Elmer, died last September. For a period of 40 years he followed the water as a cook, and in his early life was a photographer. For the past few years he has remained at home and was employed by D.T. Bayles & Son.
