Army National Guard 1960- 1968

Bill Shell, age 69, died on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, KY, following a year long battle with AML. His sons visited with their dad for several hours, told him they loved him and that they would see him the next day. His wife was with him when he passed at 12:15 a.m. as well as special Hospice nurse Dana. (I wrote the obit when I returned home after he passed on the 12th)

Born April 15, 1943, at Stanford KY, he was the only child of the late Henry and Laverne Estes Shell.

Bill married his teenage sweetheart, Darla Singleton, on Saturday, June 13, 1964, at Eubank, KY. Charles Alan and Joseph Michael, added abundant joy to their marriage.

A member of Eubank Baptist Church since 1955, he joined the Army National Guard before graduating from Eubank High School in 1961. He was the retired owner of Bill Shell Plumbing Company in Lexington.

Bill's activities included earning his private pilot license in 1970 and flying for a few years. He also enjoyed riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle with friends and taking week long trips throughout the United States and Canada. Good food and companionship were enjoyed when the Gold Wing Wednesday Night Riders went to Hall's on the river. When his beloved granddaughters arrived "Poppaw" began woodworking. His favorite project was making large rocking horses with walnut his dad had saved from his timber business years before.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 48 years; Chuck, wife Jamie and daughter Briana; Joey and daughters Amanda and Allison; loving cousins who will miss him dearly and many others who enjoyed his friendship.

Funeral service was held at 11:00 on Friday the 15th at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY with Brother Shelby Reynolds officiating. Eulogy given by B.W. Blanton. Burial was at Eubank Cemetery.

Bill was given extra months with many wonderful days because of the generosity of blood and platelet donors. I ask you to please consider giving a Gift of Life to blood cancer patients by donating at your local blood center. We are so thankful for those who gave. He was treated for 7 months with blood transfusions and pro-crit shots before an accurate diagnosis was made and started chemo. His last blood transfusion was Feb.4th.
~~~~~
I wanted to donate my O negative blood to help others, but an illness I had as a teen made it impossible.
~~~~~~
A heartwarming message from Find A Grave friend, D. Thompson:
"Up until my health went bad, I was a regular blood donor at my office and gave over five gallons. It was a great feeling."

Friend Jason of England wrote about his beloved dad:
"Dad was also a life long blood donor for over 37 years and despite his busy lifestyle he would regularly donate many pints of blood each year, and in all those years he never missed a session until he was later diagnosed with a heart condition in 1994."

Thanks Jason for the wonderful job you did on the plane photo, I appreciate it so very much !

Bill's cousin Norma shared that as of today her husband has donated 22 gallons of blood. Way to go Dave!!! Wishing many blessings on you because of your devotion to helping others in this way. 7-18-17

Many thanks to everyone who visits Bill's memorial.
