Born in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, the son of John & Elizabeth (Mumper) Barnhart, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Toboyne Township. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle September 14, 1864, as a private with Co. I, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865. He is on the company register with a middle initial of "B."

He married Margaret A. "Maggie" Berrier December 12, 1876, in Blain, Perry County, and fathered Marshall P. (b. 01/12/78), Lawrence W. (b. 12/23/81), Lillian Edith (B. 01/15/84), Myrtle M. (b. 05/24/86), Alice D. (b. 05/12/88), and Melissa B. (b. 08/02/95).
