Ireton, Iowa ~ Dick Altena, 87, of Orange City, IA, formerly of Ireton, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, IA.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, IA. Pastor Norlyn Van Beek and Pastor Bob Pollema will officiate. Burial will be prior to the service at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley, IA. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting the family.

Dick was born February 16, 1928 in Ireton, IA, the son of Henry and Effie (Broek) Altena. He attended the Rock Valley Christian School through the eighth grade. He married Winifred Vanden Berg in Rock Valley, IA on February 15, 1950. He was employed for Blankespoor Black Smith, Kooima Machine and Siouxland Implement, where he was known as the baler man. He was an active member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon.

In 2008 he and Winifred moved to the Homestead in Sioux Center, IA. Winifred passed away in July, 2013. In May, 2014 he moved to Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, IA. He enjoyed farming, spending time with his family and being a witness to others of his loving Savior. In his many years of country calls, fixing balers and other equipment, he made many friends and touched many lives.

He is survived by his children, Wanetta (Rod) Vander Plas of Ireton, IA, Eunice (David) Koopmans of Maurice, IA, Harley (Shelly) Altena of OshKosh, NE, Joella (Rick) Wieseler of Ireton, IA, Lori (Rod) Bolkema of Boyden, IA, and Audrey (Mike) Vander Stelt of Maurice, IA 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. A brother, Louis Altena of Rock Valley, IA, sister, Marlene TeSlaa of Rock Valley, IA and sister-in-law, Wilma Altena of Hull, IA and many nieces and nephews also survive Dick.

He is preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Winetta; great grandsons, Tanner Kollis and Eli Tirril; 4 brothers and one sister.
