Born about 1830, Melmoth M. Lanford was from the large family of Jesse and Mary (Campbell) Lanford, who lived in DeKalb County, Georgia. He married Nancy Ann Phillips in neighboring Gwinnett County on 20 Jan 1858.

During the Civil War, Melmoth's name first appears on a muster roll in DeKalb County on 4 Mar 1862. He enlisted on 1 July 1862 at Camp Randolph and became a Private in Co. C, 12th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery, with his name first appearing in muster 31 Oct 1863.

Melmoth was reported missing 22 Sept 1864 after the fight at Fisher's Hill near Strasburg, Virginia. He was captured that day or the next and subsequently sent to Point Lookout in Maryland. He was finally released on 29 June 1865, started home, but died on the way at Orangeburg, SC.

Melmoth's Oath of Allegiance, sworn at Point Lookout when he was released, stated that he resided in Gwinnett Co., GA, was 5' 10" tall, and had brown hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion.

Melmoth's exact birth and death dates come from the article "Jesse Lanford" by Codell Skelton in the book Gwinnett County, Georgia Families 1818-1968 (Alice Smythe McCabe, editor (Lawrenceville, GA: Gwinnett Historical Society , 1988). In the article, the author states that Melmoth was buried in the "Civil War Military Cemetery" in Richmond, VA, but this seems unlikely given that he died close to the South Carolina - Georgia border.
