Ann Arnold

Miss Ann Arnold

Died Friday As Result of Injuries Sustained January 1.

Miss Ann Arnold, well known by almost every one in Carlisle and Haddon township, where she has taught school since 1878, died at her home in Carlisle Friday from the effects of internal injuries received in the yard of her home on New Year's Eve, at which time, while accompanying the children of her brother, George Arnold to their home, she fell over a kettle which was lying in the yard.

At first the injuries were not supposed to be of a serious nature, but as time passed and no relief could be afforded her, death came to her relief after almost three weeks of suffering. Prior to the accident Miss Arnold had been teaching at the Shake school house in Haddon township.

The Rev. P.C. Cauble of Vincennes, had charge of the funeral services, which were conducted from her home Sunday morning at 10:00 o'clock. The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 185, of which she was a member attended the services in a body, as well as a large number of friends and relatives.

The following obituary was read by Rev. Cauble:

Ann Arnold, daughter of G. G. M. and Rachel Arnold, was born Feb. 8, 1855, and departed this life at her home in Carlisle Friday morning, Jan. 17, 1908, aged 52 years, 11 months, and 9 days. With the exception of a few years that the family lived in Sullivan, her entire life has been spent in Carlisle. She began her life work as a teacher at the age of eighteen. One year only since then has she rested during this period of 35 years. Her services in this capacity have been given to Haddon township, she having taught many years in the Carlisle schools as primary teacher.

It would be difficult, indeed, to estimate the great good following her long life of usefulness as a teacher, but the example of her patience, untiring efforts and great love for the children under her care will be long remembered.

In a short sketch like this it is impossible to even touch upon the many beautiful traits in her characters that so endeared her to kindred and friends; but perhaps one of her most prominent characteristics was her unselfishness. She was over ready to assist her parents by her efforts, and loving devotion to her aged mother has often been the subject of favorable comment. It was remarked by one who loved her best. "Hers was a life of sacrifice." But she did not consider it so and cheerfully did what she could for others, happy in the knowledge of having contributed to the comfort of those dear to her. Her unfailing cheerfulness under all, and often adverse, circumstances is another previous legacy left to her friends. Even in the last days of her suffering, her bright, cheery answer was ready for every inquiry.

She united with the Christian church of Carlisle, under the pastorate of Elder F. C. Cauble, in 1899, and has ever lived true to her profession. She gave valuable services as superintendent and teacher of the Sunday school, was active in the work of the Christian Endeavor and was especially helpful and interested in the work of the C. V. B. M.

She was also an active member of the Eastern Star, Chap. 185. So we briefly mention the places- in home, in school and church- where her services have been so freely given, and will be so sadly missed, wishing that we might express the gratitude we have for such life. But she has passed beyond earthly appreciation to the reward above, and to the promised plaudit, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

She is survived by her mother, two brothers- George, of Carlisle, and Henry, of Louisville; and one sister- Mrs. Ida Spears, of Swayzee, Ind.

Interment took place at the Indian Prairie cemetery. 6 miles east of Carlisle.
