Notre Dame Win, Weather Makes For Fun Trip By Joe Morrissey Sports Editor galesburg RegisterMaiI Galesburg Friday, Nov. 23, 1973 NOTRE DAME, Ind.-When was the last time you saw a Thanksgiving Day football game with fte temperature in the sixties? For me and more than 57,* 000 others it was Thursday afternoon at Notre Dame Stadium. I was part of a group of 40 on the bus excursion to the Air Force-Notre Dame game. It was a benefit project for David Vega, the 17-year-old Galesburg youth who has been ill for 18 months with a form of sclerosis. Everything worked out as if by plan. The swift and smooth bus trip, ideal weather and a 48-15 Irish victory. Weather-wise, it was more like an early season baseball game than a late November football game. But the most satisfying part was the success in the fundraising aspect of the trip. There were donations and money raised through concessions on the bus in addition to the original ticket sale. Leo Jordan and Joe Carr, who have been big pushers all along in the project, said they would announce the total amount raised for the Vega fund early next week. The undefeated Irish, who are headed for the Sugar Bowl New Year's Day, went into the game a heavy favorite. They wasted no time taking command and before the first quarter was over were ahead 28-0. Three costly first quarter turnvoers by the Air Force aided Notre Dame's cause and the Irish were well on their way to a 1-sided victory. But the Falcons came back to score. twice on touchdowns
