Almost before time had been given to make his acquaintance, death has robbed our village of a good man. Early Friday morning of last week, W. F. Vanderburgh died of a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Joslyn of Eltinge Avenue. He had been in failing health for some years. Last summer Mr. and Mrs. Vanderburgh, with their daughter and her children, came to our village to make their home.
Mr. Vanderburgh was born in 1855 in Port Huron, Mich. On August 27, 1878, he married Sarah Eltinge, daughter of Edmund Eltinge of New Paltz. At that time he was paymaster of the Grand Trunk Railroad. Later he became a bank president in Rochester, Mich. For a number of years before coming to live in our village, Mr. Vanderburgh engaged in the lumber business in Cairo, Illinois. After twenty years as secretary of the Cairo Association of Commerce, he resigned last July, just before leaving for our village. In Cairo he was also a vestryman in the Church of the Redeemer, and active in the Episcopal church.
Besides his wife, and his daughter Mrs. Joslyn, who was Pauline Vanderburgh, Mr. Vanderburgh leaves three grandchildren, Magda, John and Henry Joslyn. A daughter Magdalene, who married Irwin Preetorius in Cairo, died in 1921.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Joslyn home on Eltinge Avenue. Interment in the New Paltz Rural cemetery.
