Born May 30, 1943, in Blythville, Ark., she was the daughter of Phillip and Sallie (Sledge) Hackett. She married Charles Dewayne "Chuck" Sterling and he preceded her in death.
She retired from General Motors in 1995 and was the owner of Chuck's Soul Food in Bedford.
She was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago under the leadership of the Rev. Joseph Silvester until 1992 when Bertha moved to Bedford from Lagrange, Ill. She was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church under the former leadership of the Rev. Sylvester Sykes and then Pastor Donald C. Griffin Sr. She was the President of the Women's Missionary Circle, President of the Missions Board and the Pastor Aid Auxillary.
She enjoyed cooking, camping watching old westerns and soap operas.
Survivors include daughters, Janice Nickeo and Johanna Williams; a son, Tracy Gist; a grandchild, Patshawna Nickeo; and a brother, Roy Hackett. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sibling, Jimmy Hackett.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at Dive Christian Church with the Rev. Donald C. Griffin Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.
