War of 1812 veteran, led his own company in the Ohio Militia.

Charles and Amelis (Batterson) Gilbert came from Litchfield county, Connecticut to Palmyra township, Portage county, Ohio in 1806 and the father followed the vocation of farmerthe remainder of his days.
To their union were born nine children. The parents both died in the faith of the Disciples' church. Charles and Amelia were highly honored as pioneers of the township and as most respectable citizens.
