William Franklin Underwood was born August 16, 1904 in Murphysboro, the son of Frank and Etta Cooper Underwood. His siblings include Alva, Robert, Raymond, Kenneth, Ralph, Mrs. Edith Doolin, Mrs. Clara McMillin, and Mrs. Lola Imhoff, all of Murphysboro. Two brothers and one sister (names unknown) preceded him in death.

He married Elsie Andre on December 21, 1932 in Jonesboro. She survives as do children, Leo B. Lipe of Granite City and Robert C. Lipe of Spokane, Washington.

Mr. Underwood was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Murphysboro and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of Mt. Carbon Christian Church.

He died at the age of 66 in the Holy Family Hospital at Spokane, Washington, from a heart condition.
