She was born in Chernigov, Russia near the Black Sea. She was four years old when her father Heinrich Hahn was crushed and killed by a log while building a home for his family. She married Friedrich Buchmiller when she was 17 and they immigrated to America in 1900 on the ship named Penitica. They travelled via the English Channel after a stop in Hamburg to visit relatives. They lived near McClusky, Sheridan Co., North Dakota and they later moved to Freewater, Umatilla Co., Oregon.
