Mr. Garland was born in Henderson County on March 23, 1929 to the late Taylor George Sr And Birdie Ann Higgins Garland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Sahl Garland and his son, Alfred Garland Jr.
He served his country from July 6, 1948 until April 29, 1971, in the United States Navy. He is a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received a Presidential Citation in the Korean War, National Defense Medal, two stars for Korea and Vietnam wars, Good Conduct, Five Stars and Vietnam Service Medal, three Stars.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara G. Edney and husband Lewis P. of Tifton, Ga. and Carol G. Kaisler and husband Patrick of Stewartstown, Pa.; three sisters, Jean Duvall of Hendersonville, Mae Hughes of East New Market, Md. and Brenda Case of Hendersonville; one brother, David Garland of Hendersonville; three grandchildren, Tara L. Edney of Gainesville, Fla., Joshua L. Edney of Tifton, Ga. and Adam H. Kaisler of Stewartstown, Pa. and four great grandchildren, Alanna, Layla, Eva Marie and Cale.
A funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard.
