Alma Bonikowsky was born on 18 February 1914 in krobanosch-Chelm, Lublin, Russia. Her parents were Emil Joseph and Anna Maria (Zozman) Bonikowsky. Her father was a pastor. Her parents and siblings immigrated to Quebec, Canada on 23 May 1927. They then travelled by train to Esk, Saskatchewan where her father was the pastor for five churches spread over a 100 miles. Alma and her brother, Arthur, did not arrive in Esk until April 1928. The family also farmed in the Lockwood and Jansen, SK areas.

Alma married Ewald Marks on 12 July 1924 in Lockwood, Saskatchewan. They moved to New Westminster and then Kelowna in British Columbia. Her husband worked in a packing house and as a laborer. Ewald died in 1976. Alma passed away on 28 September 199 in Kelowna, B.C. She was buried in Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.
