Marcus Gill (1814-1884) Born in Gills Mill, Bath Co, KY to Samuel Criswell Gill and Sarah Malone, Col. Marcus Gill was an educated farmer and mill operator. He first married Sarah Ann Bruton and had 4 children, 3 that lived to adulthood; after her death in 1846, he married her first cousin, Mary Jane and had another 7 children; 5 lived to adulthood. He came to Jackson Co, in 1854, buying the land that Dabney Lipscomb owned just to the north of New Santa Fe and today is part of Verona Hills subdivision. He was a pro-slavery man and was friends with William Quantrill. His large home, built onto an original log cabin, stood as a landmark in southern Jackson Co and was passed to his daughter, Susan Gill McGee (wife to Allen B. H. McGee, son of one of the original founders of Kansas City). The house was torn down by JC Nichols in 1978. His son Turner A. Gill was mayor of Kansas City in 1875-1876. Marcus died in 1884 in Plattsburg, MO. and is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery. Charter member.
