Best-Pierce Vows Read in Germany
Headquarters, Third United States army, Heidelberg, Germany – Defying superstition, they chose Friday the Thirteenth of September for their double wedding in Heidelberg's Providence church. First Lieutenant Charles Best, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Best, 101 Norrie street, Ironwood, took 1st WAC Sergeant Mildred Pierce of Stanton, Tennessee, as his wife. The other couple were WAC T-4 Ruth Van Hauten of Columbus, Ohio, and Mr. Charles J. Gutzman of Kansas City, Kansas.

First Lieutenant George P. Fulton of the 8000 Provisional truck company acted as best man to Lieutenant Best; Captain Roland Johnson, Third army chaplain gave the bride away and Captain Raymond L. Kasper, also Chaplain of Third army, performed the ceremony.

An open carriage drawn by two white horses driven by a coachman in the national livery of Hungary and loaded with flowers, carried the happy couples the mile and a half to the elaborately decorated WAC "Eagle's Nest" club at Third army command post. More than two hundred guests, including Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes, commanding general of Third army, and Mrs. Keyes, ate, drank and were merry with the two couples.

Originally members of the Seventh army when it first opened the command post near Heidelberg, all have remained with Third army since it took over in March, but Lieutenant Best is the only one who continues to be a member of the armed forces.
