Charles was born to James Miller & Mary Baker in Kosciusko County, Indiana. He moved with his parents to Minnesota in 1860 & to Saunders County Nebraska in 1870. He married Harriet C. (Hattie) Colbert March 7, 1875 in Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska.
Immediately after being married, they moved to Perry County, Ohio where they lived with and cared for Hattie's grandmother in her declining years. They returned to Nebraska in the spring of 1881 & lived on the homestead in Green Precinct until 1893, when they moved to Ashland.
Charles later went into the meat business with & eventually sold out to Mr. Derleth. In June 1900, he went into business with E.J. Rose buying grain and stock.
Charles & Hattie had four children, Thomas J. & Elizabeth M., born in Ohio, & Wesley Iliff & Charles F., born in Nebraska.
Hattie passed away in May 1916 & in September of that year, Charles moved to Los Angeles, California, where he married Carolyn "Carrie" Martin on June 12, 1917. He passed away August 24, 1922 & was buried August 26 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale. Carrie passed away April 8, 1938 & was buried next to Charles.

Charles Miller, an extensive farmer & grain & stock dealer of Saunders County, Nebraska owns a fine large residence at Ashland, besides much valuable farming land in Green Precinct. He is the son of James Miller, a native of Lancaster County, & Mary Baker, daughter of Jacob Baker, a respected resident of Johnstown, Licking County, Ohio. James & Mary had the following children: Enos, who died in infancy; John, a resident of Ashland; Enoch, deceased; Charles, the subject hereof; Elijah, also deceased; Jemima, wife of Samuel Merriman; Mary, wife of George Herron; Oliver, deceased; Rohama; & Tina, wife of L.T. Farmer. They were raised in the Baptist faith, the religion of their parents.
A native of Indiana, Charles grew to manhood in Minnesota. He started out to seek his own fortune, not knowing just where he would locate when he met a man who was on his way to take up a claim in Saunders County, Nebraska & accompanied him on the trip. It took 3 weeks to make the 450 mile trip & upon seeing the land, Charles at once decided to locate there also.
In 1870, he built a double-board house on the line of two homestead tracts & induced his parents to occupy one of them. He continued to improve & till his land & in 1881, built a fine large residence, just east of the old house. He set out fine orchards & beautiful shade trees & converted the rolling prairie into cultivated fields. His residence was surrounded by spacious lawns & approached by lovely driveways, shaded by the finest trees obtainable. He subsequently purchased his father's claim & also bought some land from the railroad company. His farm now contains 360 acres & is considered one of the finest in Green Precinct. His eldest son now has charge of this farm, but the father still retains management of it.
In 1893, he purchased of Shaler Wells, the estate formerly owned by Professor King, of Ashland. This estate comprises one block of land, a beautiful large residence, convenient barn & buildings & is a most desirable home.
In June 1900, Charles entered into partnership with E.J. Rose, under the firm name of Miller & Rose, for the purpose of buying grain, with office & elevator near the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad depot, where they are meeting with success.
Charles & family worship at the M.E. Church. Fraternally he affiliates with lodge No. 110 F. & A. M. & also with the Royal Mystic Legion. He is well known all over the country. He is a man of progressive ideas & has done much to develop the natural resources of this part of Nebraska.
