EVELYN ELAINE SHIMANEK

Evelyn E. Shimanek, age 96, died unexpectedly on Oct. 9, 2008, in Green Bay.

She was born on March 23, 1912, to the late John and Anna (Straka) Spevacek in the town of Gibson, Manitowoc County. She graduated from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, in 1929.

She married Edward Shimanek in June 1933. They built a house on North Tenth Street in Manitowoc, where they spent their life together, and where she lived for 73 of her 96 years, moving in April 2006 to Green Bay to be closer to family.

Before retiring, Evelyn worked many years for the Boston Store/Johnson Hills Department Store in downtown Manitowoc. She and Ed loved to travel and visited most of the lower 48.

They also shared a love of fishing and weekends together at their retreat near Maribel Caves. They were shrewd sheep head players as well. Edwin preceded her in death in 1983.

In recent years, Evelyn enjoyed playing canasta, watching the Brewers, the Packers, and TV quiz shows, where she could match wits with the contestants. She also enjoyed reading about nature, travel, politics and current affairs, always curious and always a free thinker. Her last trip was to Madison in 2006, to visit the home of grandniece, (private), and do her own shopping at Trader Joe's.

(Survivors omitted for privacy)

She was preceded in death by her husband: Edwin; her brother: Stanley Spevacek; niece: Audrey Spevacek; and grandnephew: Brian Spevacek.

Entombment was at Knollwood Mausoleum in Manitowoc next to her beloved Edward. By her request, no funeral service was held. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc assisted the Shimanek family.

We appreciate the care and respect she received while residing at Rebekah Haven the last two years. Her spitfire attitude remains alive within us all.
