......Anthony Gosnold was born circa 1540 at Grundisborough, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Robert Gosnold II and Mary Vesey. Robert was born circa 1512 at Otley Hall, Suffolk. He was a Justice of the Peace. His wife Mary Vesey was born in 1516 in Hadleigh, Suffolk.

......Anthony married Dorothy Bacon and had the following children: Bartholomew, Anthony, Ann, Margaret, Marye, Robert, Dorothie, Robert and Elizabeth.

......Two of their sons, Bartholomew and Anthony went to Virginia to establish the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607. Bartholomew, born in 1571 at Grundisburgh, Suffolk, commanded the "Goodspeed". He was vice admiral of the three ships, "The Sarah Constant", "The Discovery" and "The Goodspeed". Prior to the Jamestown voyage, Bartholomew had discovered the island of Martha's Vineyard in 1602, naming it after his daughter Martha.

......In the list of the first Jamestown settlers of May 13, 1607, Bartholomew was listed in the category "Councill", along with Master Edward Maria Wingfield (became first governor of the new colony), Captaine John Smyth, Captaine John Ratcliffe, Captaine John Martin, and Captain George Kendall.

......Sadly, after all of Captain Bartholomew's efforts to found and establish the new Virginia colony at Jamestown, he died of swamp fever August 22, 1607, five months after his arrival. He is buried at James Fort Burial Ground, James City County, Virginia. His father Anthony had died September 7, 1602, and did not live to see his son's achievement of founding Jamestown.

......Anthony and Dorothy Bacon's other son, Anthony, was also on the Jamestown voyage with his brother Bartholomew.
Anthony was listed under the category "Gentlemen". He also did not survive in Jamestown. He was drowned in a storm, while trying to cross the James River, attempting to reach Hogg Island. He died January 7, 1609.
