According to his enlistment records, Charles was born in Glasgow, Scotland, about 1836. So far no record of his parents has come to light.

Sometime before 1860, Charles married his wife, Mary. They had at least three children.

On 18 Feb 1862 Charles, a factory operative, mustered into service with Company A of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 26 years old.

Charles was described as being 5 feet, 11 and 1/2 inch, with black eyes, brown hair and a light complexion. On 1 Jul 1862 he was promoted to Corporal.

On 3 Jul 1863 he was wounded at The Battle of Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

In Dec 1863, Charles was at Patterson Park Hospital, Baltimore, MD, absent from his unit, wounded. By Feb 1864, he was again present in his regiment, and on 1 May 1864 he was promoted to Sergeant.

On 27 Jul 1864 Charles ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by transfer to the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

On 29 Jul 1864 he was taken prisoner at Deep Bottom, Virginia, and on 25 Jan 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina, he escaped from prison.

On 12 Mar 1865, at Baltimore City, Maryland, Charles was in the hospital, and he ended his service on 22 May 1865.

By 10 Jun 1870 Charles and his family lived in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, where they were enumerated in the Federal Census.

Charles applied for a veteran's pension on 10 Oct 1870, with application number 160669, but no certificate is recorded.

He died on 15 Feb 1871 at New York. He was 35 years old.

He was buried in Feb 1871 at Waterford Rural Cemetery, Waterford, Saratoga County, New York, as a Sergent of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

On 13 Sep 1871 his wife, Mary, received a widow's pension based on Charles's service.

Mary was enumerated as the widow of Charles McFarland, of the 15th Massachusetts, in the 1890 Veterans' Schedules of the US Federal Census in Jun 1890 at Cohoes, Albany County, New York, mentioning his service as a Sergeant in the 20th Massachusetts.
