Death Notice - Erie Times News September 19, 2009

"Donald Spears, 76, died on September 14, 2009 at HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville. [FL] He was born in Lawrence Park, PA and moved to this area 24 years ago from Erie, PA. He served in the US Air Force and was a Police Officer in Erie, PA." [Millcreek, PA]

He is survived by his son ... of Achworth, Georgia, daughters ... of Spring Hill, FL; and ... of Arizona, six grandchildren, ...; 2 great grandchildren ...; and 4 sisters ..., and 2 brothers ..."

The following was published as a "Letter To The Editor" in the Erie Times News shortly after Don's passing. The name of the retired police officer who wrote this tribute to Don is not being shown as he is still living.

"Millcreek Officer Mentored Others - Sadly, after reading of Donald Spears 5-line obituary in the September 19 Erie Times News, I felt compelled to say more about the man. Donald Spears was a 25 year veteran of the Millcreek Police Department, an amateur scholar and voracious reader of many books of various subjects.

Don was an experienced patrolman when I began my career at Millcreek in 1965 and, as such, one of the officers assigned as a "coach" to the new police officers. His total demeanor exuded a tough, squared away policeman. He was quite, strict, but quick to point out any failings or deficiencies in a rookie's police work. You never knew how you were progressing with Don; he was quite reticent with compliments. A "that wasn't too bad" following an incident that you thought should have earned you the Medal of Honor was a major kudos coming from Spears.

Overtime, he became my friend. He was someone I looked up to and turned to for advice until he retired to Florida in 1985. On Don's last day, May 31, 1985, he gave me some final pieces of advice about police work and life in general. All or most of his counsel was spot on, not that I heeded all of it. Don was a very intelligent individual and much of his wisdom was lost on his audience.

Don was one of the core group of excellent police officers who established and maintained the standards and professionalism that you find in the Millcreek Police Department today. This original group is aging fast and passing from the scene, but I see their efforts living on and continuing in the high standards of today's Millcreek Township Police Department.

My thought's to Don's children, ..., Rest in peace, Donald."
