Alfred filed for divorce May 5, 1877 in Brown Co., stating he and Nancy had separated Jan. 1, 1877. He alleged adultery and asked for custody of their children, Mary Melvina, 5, and George W., 2. He filed a second complaint March 6, 1878, stating they had separated July 10, 1877. Box 80, file 22, and Box 85, file 2. This second petition was apparently soon granted, as Alfred married Peninah Pittman soon afterward. Nancy may have gone to Oklahoma, noted in her son George Palmer's 1906 marriage application.
