ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF PETER KOERNER
Aged Man Fell From Buggy Sunday When Horse Became Frightened at Auto
"Peter Koerner, 88 years old, father of Valentine Koerner of Cabery, met almost instant death last Sunday morning when he fell from a buggy when the
horse which was hitched to it became frightened at an approaching automobile.
The accident occurred a little more than a mile north of Cullom about 9 o'clock. The aged man and his grandson Joe Koerner, were driving from Cabery to Cullom to spend the day with relatives and had planned to attend mass at St. John's church in Cullom that morning.
When a little north of the country school house, a mile north of Cullom, they were approached by an automobile which was driven by Chris Paulson and Will Kiley of Cullom. When the men in the auto noticed that the horse was likely to give trouble, they stopped the car, but the horse began to shy and turned quickly, throwing Mr. Koerner, Sr. to the ground, although the buggy did not turn over.
Mr. Koerner was picked up and taken in the auto to Cullom as quickly as possible and a physician called, but it is thought that the aged man was dead before he had been carried into the house of his son, George Koerner.
The county coroner was called and an inquest was held. Joseph Koerner, who was driving the horse exonerated the men in the automobile from any blame and the jury's verdict was to the effect that death was clearly accidental. An examination of the body showed a little bruise on the left side of his head but Dr. Pressler stated that the injuries were not serious and it is probable that death was due to the shock received by the aged man..................................................
Peter Koerner was of that sturdy stock of Germans, who have played an important part in the settlement and development of our country. Although nearly ninety years of age, he was as active as many men of half his age.........."
