John S. Saylor, who passed away at his home, 75 Saylor street, Eighth Ward, at noon yesterday after a long illness of a complication of diseases, was born near Thomas' Mills, in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, on June 4, 1850, and was a son of Jacob and Susanna (Speigle) Saylor. John S. Saylor began working for the Cambria Iron Company in the old puddle mill, later transferring to the rail mill, which at that time was under the supervision of the late Alexander Hamilton. From the rail mill he went to the blooming mill, where he was employed until about 30 years ago, when he went to work in the axle plant. He fractured a leg while at work about three years ago, making it necessary for him to retire at that time.

John S. Saylor and Miss Catherine Trexel, daughter of Abram E. Trexel, were married on August 25, 1872, by the late B. F. Slick, J. P. Mr. and Mrs. Saylor celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren in the fall of 1922. Mrs. Saylor survives her husband, with the following children: Attorney Tillman K. Saylor, City Solicitor and prominent in affairs of the Y.M.C.A., who was in Cleveland, O. yesterday attending a Y.M.C.A. convention; Harvey L. Saylor, of Southmont; Miss Edna Saylor, a teacher in the W. A. Cochran Junior High School; Elizabeth, wife of David M. Baumgardner, of Hershberger street; Garfield A. Saylor, San Gabriel, Cal.; Morgan M. Saylor, Berkley, Cal.; O. Webster Saylor, of Saylor street, and J. Calvin Saylor, a dental student at the University of Pittsburg. A son, Robert Russell Saylor, died in August, 1904. Mr. Saylor was a brother of Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Thomas; Jacob S., Lawrence, Joseph, James and Levi Saylor, and Katherine, widow of the Rev. David D. Berkey who passed away a few years ago while serving as pastor of the Dale Evangelical Church.

The grandchildren are John Philips, Anna Catherine, Tillman Kulp jr., of 1266 Saylor street; Dorothy, Lawrence Webster, Louis and Morgan and Jean Marie Saylor.

Mr. Saylor made his home in the Roxbury district for about 45 years and was at one time a member of the Borough Council of Roxbury and later was a member of the School Board. For more than 40 years he was a member of the Thomas Mennonite Church.

Funeral services will be held at the Saylor residence at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon and will be in charge of the Rev. Levi Blough, of the Mennonite denomination, to be assisted by the Rev. Dr. J. Harvey Mickley, of the Reformed Church, and the Rev. T. J. Barlett; of the Derby-street Evangelical Church. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
