Mrs. Pauline H. Young, (Mother Young) daughter of the late Reverend Peter Hunter, Sr. and Mrs. Laura Robertson Hunter, was born January 2, 1913 in Georgetown County, South Carolina. She departed this life on March 31, 2013 at her home on Easter Sunday morning.

Mother Young was raised in a Christian home and came to know the Lord as a child. She joined her family church, Hopewell Baptist Church, at a young age and attended services with her parents. After her marriage to her husband, the late Mr. Olin Young, she joined St. Luke AME Church. Mother Young worked for Choppee Schools in the cafeteria as the baker until her retirement. While employed at Choppee Schools she attended adult night school and completed her studies to earn her high school diploma. She believed strongly in education and community involvement. She worked to bring the first Community Center for crafts and respite services to the St. Luke area. She lived during a time period when Blacks could not freely vote. She was pleased, however, to cast her vote for the nation's first African American President. Although she had begun to slow down during the last national election, it did not stop her from casting an absentee ballot for the President and other elected officials. In addition to her community involvement, she was known throughout the community for her delicious cinnamon rolls. While she loved to bake and plant flowers year round, her greatest joy was fishing. She and her fishing buddies Mrs. Lucille Lewis and the late Sister Inell Young were known to take a yearly deep sea fishing trip and spent late nights fishing in nearly every creek in Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties.

Mother Young's life exemplified a life of Christian service and compassion. She loved the Lord Jesus and showed it by reaching out to all regardless of their circumstances or others' opinions of them. She served in her church on the Senior Choir, Stewardess Board and Women's Missionary Society. She was known in the church and community as a soft-spoken person filled with wisdom and long patience. Many sought her out in both church and community in their times of challenges or when they simply needed a friend to listen. Her home was known as "Grand Central Station" because she welcomed all who entered her doors and gave them a place at her table or a night's rest.

Mother Young was joined in Holy wedlock to the late Mr. Olin Young, Sr. on April 4, 1934. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage before his passing. To this union eleven children were born, of which one preceded her to the grave; Olin Young, Jr. (Queenie). She was also preceded in death by her four siblings: Mrs. Mary Williams, Mrs. Sarah Pressley, Reverend Peter Hunter, Jr. and Mr. Charlie Hunter.

She leaves to cherish her well-lived life ten children: Florence Gooden (Jessie) of Charlotte, NC, Willie James Young (Judy) of Middleton, CT, Laura Sumpter (Tommy deceased) of Boston, MA, Mary Murphy (Bartell) of Boston, MA, Sarah Gates of Boston MA, Florrie Good (Theophilus) of Boston, MA, Paul Young (Alberta) of Summerville SC, Silas Young (Betty) of Boston, MA, Patricia White (Elbert) of Augusta, GA, and Charles E. Young (Sandra) of Columbia, SC.; two adopted children, Bell Wallace and Bishop Floyd Knowlin after the death of his mother; two sisters-in-law, Magdalene Young Vasquez and Ruby Young. She was also blessed to witness the birth of seventy-eight grandchildren, sixty-seven great-grandchildren, thirty-four great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren. Others who will mourn her passing are one of her oldest living nieces, Claudia Cohen and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends whom she loved dearly.
