Peter Waldo was a wealthy merchant of Lyon who was convicted of a spiritual need. He gave his money to the poor and condemned the excesses of the Papacy. His followers were known as Waldenses. He is credited with providing the New Testament in the mother tongue.Waldo was excommunicated. His followers were driven to the high valleys of Piedmont where their descendants lived for centuries.
