HARRY NEWCOMER, of 245 S. Potomac St., former Washington County Register of Wills, died at the Washington County Hospital.
Born in Benevola, he was the son of Henry and Louisa Jane Harp Newcomer.
He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Berger, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Newcomer graduated in 1904 from Academy High School in Hagerstown. After graduation, he worked in the Boonsboro Bank, then went into business with Frank H. Newcomer at the Hagerstown Grocery Co. He stayed with the firm until 1930 when he was elected to the office of Register of Wills of Washington County, an office he held until 1962.
A member of the Republican party, he served on many levels in county government. For many years he was Treasurer of the Washington County Hospital, and the Quincy Orphanage and Home, Quincy, Pa.
He was a member and past president of the Alsatia Club, and a member of the Hagerstown Torch Club. He was director emeritus of Jamison Door Co.
He was a life-long member of Benevola United Methodist Church where he served as teacher of the ladies class and Sunday School superintendent, and became honorary member of the board of trustees.
Services will be held at the Benevola United Methodist Church Wednesday at 2 pm, the Rev. David E. Stum officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Arrangements by Norment Funeral Home.
